Paweł Warchoł - a champion draughtsman of our time; until recently he avoided the use of his groundbreaking method of drawing to create human portraits. Instead, he produced illusionistic portraits of non-existent objects - giant Holzmachines of his own invention. His method of building the space of the picture with the use of a dense grid of thin strokes resulted in an unusual three-dimensional effect and photographic precision in copying the designatum. For each Holzmachine, the designatum was a product of the artist's imagination, but still the viewer received an almost palpable image of it. In recent years, however, Paweł Warchoł has been using models existing in the real world, focusing on two markedly different motifs representing the physical aspect of human existence. The first one, quite macabre in expression, is the Auschwitz rings being the only surviving traces of prisoners burnt in Auschwitz crematoria. The second is represented by naturalistic portraits of the Warchoł. These include the Uncles cycle and a series of the artist's self-portraits.
