The exhibition presents the work of Zbigniew Rybczyński - an outstanding film director, cinematographer, author of experimental animated films, video works and video clips, innovator in the art of film. The artist is best known for his "Tango" which received the Academy Award for the best short animated film in 1982 - the first ever Oscar for a Polish film production. This, however, is not the only film by Rybczynski which has won public acclaim at international festivals. The artist has received numerous awards for his films made with the use of computer-integrated systems, including Emmy Award and the Prix Italia for "The Orchestra" and The Golden Gate Award for "Kafka". He also received a slew of awards for his video to the song "Imagine" by John Lennon (1986).
The exhibition On Visual Image is an extraordinary collection, retracing the artist's way to film production - the final product of his creative development. The collection includes sketches, drawings, charts, and records of ideas and technical solutions befitting more a scientist than an artist. An inventor confronting problems and handling tasks that no one has ever considered before, Zbigniew Rybczynski is not without reason referred to as the Leonardo da Vinci of the modern era.
The exhibition includes a few hundred works on paper, four large-format paintings, and the screening of a number of famous films by the artist, including the iconic Tango. The exhibition On Visual Image , prepared by the WRO Art Centre, is held courtesy of the Art Stations Foundation. ‘It has been presented in the ADK (Akademie der Künste) in Berlin, ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie) in Karlsruhe, WRO Art Centre in Wrocław, and the Atlas Sztuki in Łódź (end of 2013, beginning of 2014)', says Agata Smalcerz, director of Galeria Bielska BWA in Bielsko-Biała.
Zbigniew Rybczyński was born in 1949 in Łódź. He has a degree from the Direction of Photography and TV Production Department of the Film School in Łódź.
He made his debut in 1973 with the film Plamuz made in the Se-Ma-For film studio in Łódź. It was one of Poland's first animated music videos with Zbigniew Namysłowski in the lead role. The artist is the author of numerous original solutions in the field of electronic image. His image composition technique gained U.S. patents specifications. He returned to Poland in 2009. During the years 2009 to 2013 he ran the Centre for Audiovisual Technologies in Wrocław.

Spring presentations of film art and multimedia in Galeria Bielska BWA
"The Exhibition of works by Zbigniew Rybczynski - winner of an Oscar for his epic Tango and great innovator in the art of film - encouraged Galeria Bielska BWA Gallery to place a stronger emphasis on film, animation and new media technologies. After all, Bielsko-Biała is home of Poland's oldest animation studio, initially producing only cartoons for adults, which was founded in 1947. The same year saw the creation of the Puppet Film Studio, which was initially operated from a private apartment in Łódź, and then transformed in 1960 into the Animation Studio Se-Ma-For (with which for Zbigniew Rybczynski was associated for many years).
"The film presentations at Galeria Bielska BWA include both international festivals of short films, documentaries, experimental and animated films, video art, as well as unique artistic shows and workshops. This will give viewers a broader and deeper contact with the moving picture created with the use of the latest technologies, as well as with the most interesting artistic achievements in the art of film (short film)."
Agata Smalcerz, director of Galeria Bielska BWA
