CZESŁAW WIECZOREK - PAINTING

Retrospective exhibition of painting by Czesław Wieczorek, an artist who has developed a unique and recognizable style. His creative work is marked with an enormous sensitivity of experience.

The artist - uncouth and persistent in his refusal to be reconciled with reality - wishes to express his unrelenting anger. Although the visual aspect of his work is in a way reminiscent of the Early Orthodox icon, its contents, consisting of allegorical and apocalyptical messages are completely different.
The exhibition contains several dozen paintings by the artist, the oldest of which, Frozen Time, dates back to 1965.

The exhibition is open from 6 January to 12 February 2012.

"Czesław Wieczorek deals with such themes as the Second World War and Jewish martyrdom, religiousness and social mores - all of these permeated with bitter irony and incisive commentary linking them to contemporary events. These paintings are clear and slightly stylized in form, which is emphasised by raised relief. The whole composition is complemented by strong, decisive colours" - says Grażyna Cybulska, curator of the exhibition.

Czesław Wieczorek was born in 1931 in Zawiercie. He studied at the Department of Graphic Art at the Katowice branch of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He obtained his degree under Professor Rafał Pomorski in 1958. He has been a member of the Polish Association of Visual Artists since 1960. He established a team of young artists called Grupa 66. His artistic pursuits include painting and applied graphics. After graduation he worked for the Provincial Community Centre in Katowice and as a graphic editor for the Mining and Metallurgy Publishing Houses (now Wydawnictwo Śląsk).

He has exhibited his works at numerous prestigious national exhibitions and competitions and won many awards, including the Polish National Exhibition by Young Visual Artists in Sopot (1965, Third Prize);  the Jan Spychalski Polish National Painting Exhibition in Poznań (1985); the Festival of Polish Contemporary Painting in the Ducal Castle in Szczecin (1985, 1988); the Bielska Jesień Painting Competition in Galeria Bielska BWA (1983, 1985, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1997), and in all of the exhibitions held by the Bielsko-Biała branch of the Association of Visual Artists where he obtained numerous awards, including the special award at the association exhibition for the best set of paintings (1980). He has also exhibited his work in France and Germany.

The exhibition has been organised as the award of the Director of Galeria Bielska BWA for the best artist of a local festival of the Festival of Visual Arts 2011 (Bielsko-Biała, June - August 2011).
Czesław Wieczorek lives in Bystra Śląska near Bielsko-Biała.
The exhibition is curated by Grażyna Cybulska.
